What EV Chargers Are Compatible With Octopus and British Gas?

Cheap overnight electricity only helps if your charger and tariff work together. Here is how to check before you buy.

If you are wondering what EV chargers are compatible with Octopus, you are asking the right question before spending money. The cheapest home charging in the UK comes from smart EV tariffs, and some of those tariffs only work fully with certain chargers or cars. Buy the wrong charger and you can end up paying more than you need to every night.

This guide explains which chargers work with Octopus Intelligent Go and Octopus Go, how British Gas EV tariffs differ, how to check your own car and charger, and which apps you actually need. Tariff rules and compatibility lists change often, so we also show you where to confirm the latest details.

What EV Chargers Are Compatible With Octopus Intelligent Go?

Intelligent Octopus Go is Octopus Energy’s smart EV tariff. It gives you a cheap rate between 11:30pm and 5:30am. Octopus can also schedule charging at other times at the cheap rate, as long as you let it control when your car charges. To do that, Octopus needs to talk directly to either your car or your charger.

Chargers that have been listed as working with Intelligent Octopus Go include:

  • Ohme Home Pro and Ohme ePod
  • Hypervolt Home 3 Pro
  • myenergi zappi
  • Andersen A3 and Andersen Quartz
  • Indra Smart Pro
  • Easee One
  • Sync Energy Wall Charger 2
  • Octopus’s own charger range

A brand name on this list is not a guarantee. Support can depend on the exact model, the hardware generation and the software version. Octopus does not publish a single permanent list. Instead, it checks your car, charger and postcode inside its app when you sign up.

Connecting through your car instead

You do not always need a compatible charger. Many popular cars can connect to Intelligent Octopus Go directly through the car’s own software. In that case, even a basic charger can work, because Octopus controls the car rather than the wall unit. Again, check your exact model in the Octopus app.

What EV Chargers Are Compatible With Octopus Go?

Octopus Go is the simpler option. It has a fixed overnight window with a cheap rate, and you set the timer yourself on your car or charger. Because Octopus does not need to control anything, Octopus Go works with any EV and any charger. You simply need a smart meter and a way to schedule charging for the cheap hours.

The trade off is price and flexibility. Octopus Go usually has a slightly higher off peak rate than Intelligent Octopus Go, and it will not give you extra cheap slots in the daytime. If your charger is not on the smart tariff list, Octopus Go is still a very good way to cut costs.

How to Check What EV Chargers Are Compatible With Octopus for Your Car

Before you buy a charger or switch tariff, run through these steps. They take about ten minutes and can save you from an expensive mistake.

  1. Check your smart meter. Every smart EV tariff needs a working smart meter that sends half hourly readings. If you do not have one, your supplier can install it.
  2. Use the Octopus eligibility checker. Enter your exact car model and your charger model if you have one. The app tells you whether it can connect.
  3. Check your Wi-Fi or mobile signal at the charger. A smart tariff depends on the charger staying online. Weak signal on a driveway is a common cause of missed charging sessions.
  4. Look at your driving. If your car can fill up comfortably in six hours on a 7kW charger, the overnight window will cover most of your needs.
  5. Read the latest terms. Rates and rules change, so confirm them on the supplier’s site on the day you switch.

What EV Chargers Are Compatible With Octopus If You Have Solar Panels?

If you have solar panels, the myenergi zappi is often the first charger people consider. It can charge your car using only surplus solar power during the day, and it also works with Intelligent Octopus Go for smart overnight charging. The Ohme and Hypervolt ranges, Andersen and several others also offer solar features on some models. The right choice depends on whether you want solar only charging, a mix, or simply the cheapest overnight rate.

Think about who is home in the day. If your car is parked at work from nine to five, daytime solar charging will not help much, and a strong overnight tariff will matter more.

Which EV Chargers Are Compatible With British Gas?

British Gas takes a more open approach. Its main EV tariff, EV Power, gives a cheap rate between midnight and 5am. It works with all EVs and any dedicated home charger, and the cheap rate applies to your whole home during that window, so your washing machine and dishwasher benefit too.

If you have a Hive EV charger, you can add Power+, which lowers the overnight rate further. British Gas also offers PeakSave, which gives half price electricity on Sundays between 11am and 4pm. British Gas estimates savings of about £330 to £490 a year compared with the standard price cap for a typical driver.

How EV chargers are installed

Whichever tariff you pick, installation follows the same pattern. A qualified electrician surveys your home, checks your fuse and consumer unit, and plans the cable route from your meter to the charger. Most home chargers are 7kW units on a single phase supply. The electrician fits the charger, adds any protection devices needed, tests it and connects it to your Wi-Fi or mobile network. They should also register it with your network operator. A standard install usually takes half a day.

Which EV Charging Apps Do I Need in the UK?

This is where many new owners get frustrated. You may end up with four apps: your car maker’s app, your charger’s app, your energy supplier’s app and a public charging app. In practice, you need fewer than that.

For home charging on a smart tariff, you usually need your energy supplier’s app to manage the tariff, and either the car app or the charger app to see charging status. For public charging, one map app such as Zapmap helps with finding where to charge, and most rapid chargers now take contactless card payment, so you rarely need a separate network app.

From a product design point of view, the number of apps is a symptom of a bigger problem. Your car, charger and energy supplier all hold part of the story, and none of them shows you the full picture. The best setups today are the ones where the tariff app controls charging and simply tells you, in plain words, when your car will be ready and what it will cost. When you choose a charger, test its app before you buy if you can, because you will use it more than you use the charger’s physical buttons.

The cheapest tariff in the world is only useful if you can tell, at a glance, that your car will be charged and ready by morning.

RiyeVolt design note

Before you buy a charger for a smart tariff

  • Confirm your car and charger model in the supplier’s eligibility checker.
  • Check signal strength where the charger will be mounted.
  • Make sure the charger is OZEV approved if you plan to use any grants.
  • Compare the overnight window with how much charging your car needs.
  • Test or read reviews of the charger’s app, not just the hardware.

Next steps

Use the Octopus Energy app eligibility checker or the British Gas EV tariff pages to confirm compatibility for your exact setup.

Book a survey with an OZEV approved installer before ordering a charger.
